The Italian-Canadian Community Foundation has the great pleasure of announcing a generous donation to the English Montreal School Board

January 24, 2013

The Italian-Canadian Community Foundation has the great pleasure of announcing a generous donation to the English Montreal School Board’s Programme d’Enseignement de la Langue d’Origine Program.  This donation will help to ensure that Italian language courses, which are already in effect at East Hill, Dante, Pierre de Coubertin and General Vanier schools, can continue to be available to interested students. The official presentation of the donation was held on January 23, 2013 at Pierre-de-Coubertin School, where school Principal Mr. Nicholas Katalifos welcomed Mr. Enrico Padula, Italian Consul, Mr. Carmine D’Argenio, FCCI President, Mrs. Sylvia Lo Bianco, Vice-Chairman of the English Montreal School Board, as well as Mrs. Franca Ciccarelli and Mrs. Enza Monaco, Italian-language instructors at Pierre-de-Coubertin as press conference panelists.

The Italian-Canadian Community Foundation also had the pleasure of receiving Mr. Antonio Poletti, Italain Consul in Montreal, Mr. Marco Tombi, Educational Superintendant with the Consulate, Mr. Martin Stiglio, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute, Mr. Massimo Pacetti, Federal MP for St-Léonard/St-Michel, Mrs.  Filomena Rotiroti, Representative for Jeanne-Mance-Viger at the Quebec National Assembly, Me Rita Lc de Santis, Representative for Bourassa-Sauvé at the Quebec National Assembly, Mr. Peter Pomponio, FCCI Treasurer, Mr. Joey Saputo, FCCI Vice-president, Mr. Robert Stocker, EMSB Director General, Mrs. Roma Medwid, EMSB Deputy Director General and Mrs. Alessandra Furfaro, EMSB Director of Pedagogical Services. Several other Italian community leaders were also in attendance.

The Italian and European economic crises have limited Italian organizations, causing them to reduce financing and subsidies with regards to the promotion of the Italian language and culture within Quebec and Montreal.  Without external intervention and support, these drastic cuts would have meant that the safeguarding of our community’s language, history and culture would be at great risk.

Given the vital impact of these drastic cuts, the Italian-Canadian Community Foundation has decided to grant an annual donation of $110,000 to the English Montreal School Board.  These contributions will allow for the conservation, the diffusion and the instruction of the Italian language and culture for the academic years 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 at the above-mentioned schools.

When granting these donations, the Foundation had two specific objectives in mind: the first was to encourage and support the teaching of Italian in public schools across Quebec.  The second was to guarantee the continuation of Italian language courses already in effect within the PELO programs (Programme d’Enseignement de la Langue d’Origine).

January 21, 2013

The Italian-Canadian Community Foundation (ICCF) is very pleased to announce it has recently granted $40,000 to the Mira Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to training guide dogs to help individuals with disabilities.

The Italian-Canadian Community Foundation has financially supported the Mira Foundation whose mission is geared toward improving the autonomy of disabled individuals, and on promoting their social integration by offering them guide dogs bred and fully trained to respond to their adaptation and rehabilitation needs, these services being free of charge.

The Italian-Canadian Community Foundation is proud to support the Mira Foundation, unique in its nature because it identifies and helps individuals with visual and motor disabilities as well as children with pervasive developmental disorders such as autism.

The Italian-Canadian Community Foundation requested that the guide dog be donated to an Italian family or a family of Italian descent. The official presentation of the donation was held on December 11, 2012 at the Christmas Cocktail hosted by the Foundation, in the presence of Mr. Lorenzo Letizia, who received his guide dog in September 2012.

The Italian-Canadian Community Foundation takes the opportunity to thank the Mira Foundation for their professional work and dedication.
